Understanding Japan Explosion Proof certification
The Japan Explosion Proof (JPEx) certification is required for electrical equipment intended for use in hazardous locations to launch in the Japanese market.
Japan Explosion Proof (JPEx) certification is a mandatory requirement for electrical equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres in Japan. This certification aligns with international standards for electrical equipment intended to be used in hazardous locations, such as the International Electrotechnical Commission System for Certification to Standards (IECEx) and the European Union’s ATEX directive for devices intended for use in explosive atmospheres. (ATEX comes from the description of the hazardous materials, “devices intended for use in explosive atmospheres,” or as written in French: “appareils destinés à être utilisés en ATmosphères EXplosives.”) The certification process involves rigorous testing and evaluation to meet the specific safety requirements set by Japanese regulations.
Why JPEx certification is essential

Market access
JPEx certification is a prerequisite for selling explosion-proof equipment in Japan. Without it, manufacturers cannot legally market their products in hazardous locations within the country.

Enhancing safety
The certification communicates that equipment meet safety standards to operate in environments with explosive gases, dust or fibers, thereby helping to reduce the risk of accidents and enhance workplace safety.
Obtaining JPEx certification demonstrates a commitment to safety and quality, giving manufacturers a competitive edge in the market.
Our JPEx certification services
At UL Solutions, we offer a comprehensive range of services to help manufacturers navigate the JPEx certification process efficiently. Our goal is to help simplify the certification journey, helping you prove that your products meet all necessary safety standards and can be marketed confidently in Japan.
For products intended for global market launch, we recommend initially applying for IECEx certification. Subsequently, the Japanese Explosion Proof (JPEx) certification request could be handled through the harmonized technical review process.
