Commercial and Professional Lighting

Leverage UL Solutions' expertise in the commercial and professional lighting industries for essential safety and performance checks, including connected lighting.

Commercial and professional lighting testing

Commercial and professional lighting is one of the most diverse segments in the lighting industry, with applications in office, warehouse and commercial spaces. It also includes specialty lighting needs for electric signs, healthcare, hospitality, entertainment and other areas. Trusted and recognized around the globe, UL Solutions provides safety testing and certification, performance and energy efficiency evaluation, Global Market Access, and connected lighting for all lighting categories.

Manufacturers, building owners, municipalities and specifiers recognize and trust the UL Mark on lighting products. Our global team actively participates in standards development and can help you stay ahead of the curve on new and evolving regulations and industry standards, including advancements in smart technologies that warrant additional security testing and certification.

Office and industrial lighting

While the lighting needs for professional offices and industrial workspaces vary dramatically, they do share common safety, performance and energy efficiency requirements.

With the advancement of LED technology and smart lighting systems, color-tunable sources, advanced dimming capabilities and unique control solutions can be leveraged to maximize illumination quality and energy efficiency.

Stores and hospitality

In retail stores, hotels and other hospitality spaces, lighting is a major factor in enhancing the atmosphere and contributing to customer experience. In addition to functional illumination, appropriate levels of light can influence product color perception and ambiance.

Certain specialized luminaires, such as those that emit ultraviolet (UV) light for disinfection purposes, are also used by retailers and hospitality companies as part of their cleaning protocols.

Emergency lighting

All certified emergency lighting equipment is evaluated for its risks of fire and electric shock injury, but key to emergency lighting evaluations is the need to verify that it will work as intended when the need arises.

Learn how UL 924, the Standard for Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment, meets the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 1 Fire Code, National Electrical Code® NFPA 70®, Article 700 Emergency Systems, and the International Fire and Building Codes. UL Solutions can test and certify to UL, CSA, IEC and other international standards and has deep expertise in regional requirements for exit signs and emergency lighting.

HazLoc lighting

Beyond the typical lighting standards, products intended for use in hazardous locations (HazLoc) need to comply to specific requirements, such as ATEX, IECEx, CCC Ex, and ECAS Ex. Our experienced engineers can help you navigate regulatory and certification requirements as you design and produce safer, more reliable, energy-efficient and innovative products for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Electric signs

UL Solutions offers comprehensive testing and certification to UL 48, the Standard for Electric Signs. These services also cover other applicable standards for digital and electric signs as well as sign retrofit kits with LED, neon, fluorescent, high-intensity discharge (HID), electroluminescent or incandescent illumination.

Learn about our general coverage program, on-site evaluations and sign retrofit services and training materials.

Horticultural and agricultural lighting

Lighting systems used for food and plant growth have additional safety requirements and performance metrics designed specifically for horticultural lighting equipment. Safety testing and certification are conducted using UL 8800, the Standard for Horticultural Lighting Equipment and Systems, and IEC 62471 for Photobiological Safety of Lamps and Lamp Systems. We also offer optional performance testing using UL S8000 for Horticultural Lighting Performance Specification.

Healthcare lighting

Our safety and performance testing in healthcare environments evaluates materials, durability, maintenance, sanitation and sustainability. We also consider specialized healthcare situations, like non-ferromagnetic MRI-compatible lighting, as well as the user interface and interoperability requirements for hospital and healthcare settings.

Lighting in this environment has progressed beyond mere illumination and now impacts doctor-patient diagnostics, helps improve patient well-being and can increase germicidal effectiveness. As new metrics related to the impact of lighting emerge with new technology, we can help you stay current with regulations.

Stage and studio lighting

Today’s LED lighting technology has advanced to provide more options for color temperatures, timing and automation controls for concerts, stage and theater, studios, TV and film, clubs and more. Lighting controls are essential to this industry, relying on consistent and responsive wireless communication protocols that often need to operate under elevated ambient conditions, including high temperatures and humidity.

UL Solutions offers a full range of evaluation services for safety testing and performance based on international standards, including UL and IEC/EN, for global market access.
