Our three-tier curriculum guides participants through foundational industry knowledge to in-depth, hands-on experiential learning.
Tier 1: Foundations
Introductory knowledge of the 3D printing industry and related technologies
Foundations of 3D Printing features software, material, printers and postprocessing techniques. This course is offered as both a one-day instructor-led workshop or as an interactive online four-module course.
Tier 2: Technical and economics
UL’s Tier 2 technical training curriculum was developed collaboratively with industry-leading adopters and AM technical subject matter experts. Intended for professional designers, engineers, technicians and business people, our technical courses teach participants how to design manufacturable, functional and compliant parts; how to select materials and processes that meet business needs; and how to incorporate safety and quality into facility set-up and part production. The curriculum consists of three distinct courses.
Design for Additive Manufacturing provides a working knowledge of how to develop, implement and optimize designs for different strategies in additive manufacturing. Through hands-on instructional design activities and case studies, students will learn about selecting the appropriate AM technology for specific design-manufacturing applications; identify and explain design challenges; and provide solutions, identify software tools, evaluate existing designs for workflow; and design parts that leverage the strengths of AM.
Additive Manufacturing Economics uses a series of real-world technical and business case studies. This two-and-a-half day, instructor-led curriculum addresses the economic factors affecting each element of the AM supply chain. Justification of investments in various AM technology applications is also covered.
Managing Quality and Safety in AM provides a working knowledge of process and material hazard management and discusses how to assure quality and safety in part production.
Selecting AM materials and processes offers in-depth knowledge on AM process and material characteristics, and teaches you how to combine AM technologies with traditional manufacturing techniques for part production.
Tier 2 courses may be hosted at multiple locations including UL offices and global partner locations, or at your own facility. Benefits include:

Tier 3: Advanced
Our Tier 3 course, Advanced Training on Metal Part Production, builds the competency needed to successfully fabricate metal parts, from AM design set up, to part build, post-processing and quality assurance. Participants learn and apply advanced metal AM during this five-day, hands-on course. Training begins with process and material fundamentals, and progresses through design, build planning, process parameters, post-processing and quality evaluation. Participants design and manufacture parts as part of project teams.
UL has collaborated with Tooling U-SME, a leader in manufacturing workforce and education development, to enhance workforce training and development efforts for manufacturers wanting to increase their capabilities in AM. Based on our multitiered AM training program and Tooling U-SME’s professional certification and AM body of knowledge, the collaboration provides a single point for AM professional certification.
