In order to realize further energy savings in the EU, the Commission published as an update on December 5, 2019, new mandatory requirements for the ecodesign of light sources and separate control gears - Regulation (EU) 2019/2020 - (also known as Single Lighting Regulation - SLR) in line with energy labeling for light sources (Energy Labeling Regulation - ELR) – (EU) 2019/2015. Due to the new definition of “light sources”, even a fridge, an oven or a microwave might be deemed a light source and need to comply with the SLR.

Major changes for producers and end-users of lighting and appliances products will take effect September 2021.

Key points

  • Regulation for ecodesign requirements for light sources and separate control gears (EU) 2019/2020 (Single Lighting Regulation): energy efficiency requirements and a new “lighting” terminology for a more circular economy approach
  • Regulation on energy labeling for light sources (EU) 2019/2015 (Energy Labeling Regulation): a rescaling of energy labeling classes and the enlargement of the scope to all light sources placed in the EU market.
