SCCS Releases Guidance on Cosmetic Ingredients Testing

December 17, 2015

EUROPEAN UNION - The European Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) released its latest guidance for the testing and safety evaluation of cosmetic ingredients to assist the cosmetic industry and governing authorities in improving their compliance with the current EU cosmetics legislation.

Last published in 2012, the document is regularly revised and updated taking into consideration the latest scientific and regulatory developments. This guidance document was adopted as of September 29, 2015.

The SCCS has also concluded the lack of sufficient information to assess the safe use of nanohydroxyapatite as a cosmetic ingredient.

It has expressed that the test materials used in toxicological studies lacked information on characterization and with poor descriptions adding that there are only a few available toxicological studies that were compliant with relevant test guidelines.
