Aliona Schaefer
Sales manager
What aspect of your role gives you a real sense of meaning or purpose?
Being a people leader. It is important to not just focus on the numbers. Behind each number is a human being who has their own life and situations outside of work. Every one of us has strengths and weaknesses. I always try to focus on building the strengths of my team rather than trying to eliminate their weaknesses. The most important part of my job is to support my team and apply their strengths. I think approaching each employee as an individual is important.
Poornima Chandrashekaraiah
Director of portfolio and industry marketing

As a strategic marketing leader, adopting a mindset centered on change and growth has not only enhanced my own performance but has also helped my team better align with organizational and business objectives, driving impactful results.

Why is our mission of working for a safer world important to you?
We get to be involved in the entire research and development process with our customers — sometimes when things are just a concept. It makes you feel proud to help show that when a product reaches the market, it will be tested to meet safety standards for the public to use. It’s great to get paid to break things to make the world a safer place!

In what ways has UL Solutions supported your development and growth?
UL Solutions is not a company that holds people back. I have been on maternity leave twice and every time I have come back I have been able to develop my career, either through moving into a better role or being promoted. I have never felt like taking time away at ULS was something that could harm my career or progress. I have had many good mentors and guides, from local leadership to members of senior leadership, support, coach and champion me.

There are two things I’ve always appreciated about working at UL Solutions, the first is the level of cooperation and support that we provide to each other driven by our mission of working for a safer world, and the second is the investment that the company has always made on talent development. I love the global aspect of the company, which has locations in 35 countries. In real estate, we interact with all of those people. Every week, I talk to people from many different backgrounds and countries.
When I started thinking about working here, I asked my kids to find 100 things with UL Marks in our house. It wasn’t that hard. Everywhere you look, you can see the impact of our work.
People care very much about the work here, and it’s not something they do just to pay the bills. People are generally excited to be a part of something bigger.
