Northbrook, Illinois – September 10, 2020 – UL, a leading global safety science company, today announced that its lighting laboratory in Carugate, Italy, located in metro Milan, is the first testing, inspection and certification facility in Europe to receive accreditation from the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) to perform tests related to SASO 2927.  This new energy efficiency functionality and labeling standard for street, road and tunnel lighting products that took effect Sept. 1, covers high-intensity discharge lamps, control gears and integrated LED technology.

A manufacturer must now be in compliance with the SASO 2927 requirements for the export of street luminaires and lamps to Saudi Arabia. As the first testing, inspection and certification company in Europe accredited to perform SASO 2927 tests, UL possesses the ability to help lighting manufacturers speed their products into the Saudi Arabia market.

“Given that streetlights in Saudi Arabia must function in variable, sometimes extreme, environmental conditions with intense temperatures, harsh sun and frequent dust storms, testing the safety, quality and performance of streetlight products is key to help ensure their proper, long-term functionality,” said Eslam Abdelaal, program manager in UL’s Lighting division. “With this accreditation from SASO, UL now has the ability to utilize our best-in-class laboratory and testing facility in Italy to help street lighting manufacturers meet necessary safety and security requirements and pave the way for a swift and smooth Saudi Arabia market entry.”

Previously, street lighting luminaires were covered by SASO 2902, a standard, terminated for street lights Aug. 31, that covered energy efficiency, functionality and labeling requirements for all lighting products. Since street, road and tunnel lighting have use cases that vary from other lighting products, SASO 2927 takes the place of SASO 2902 for this special product category and includes specific requirements related to the electrical and mechanical components, functionality and performance and energy efficiency of street lighting products.

“Navigating the international regulatory landscape is a complex and challenging task. This SASO accreditation complements our existing testing and certification expertise, global scope and localized knowledge.  We stand ready to address market access needs, to help ensure a streamlined Saudi Arabia market entry,” said Hans Laschefski, industry marketing manager for Lighting in the EMEA region.
