Provider of Soundproof Phone Booths, ROOM, Becomes First in Its Category to Earn UL GREENGUARD Certification

Growing office pod category calls for product emission testing, risk abatement

GREENGUARD Certified phone booth

March 3, 2020

MARIETTA, GA., March 3, 2020 — UL today announced that ROOM, a company that is reinventing the modern workplace with modular and creative office solutions, became the first office pod manufacturer to earn UL GREENGUARD Certification for its soundproof phone booths.

The achievement of UL GREENGUARD Certification for ROOM products indicates they meet rigorous low-emissions standards, supporting healthy office environments. This is particularly important where office pods are concerned, as users are enclosed in small spaces with the potential for limited ventilation.

Office pods are part of an innovative and quickly growing category of furnishings designed to bring privacy and quiet to open office spaces. As with any new type of product, new features may be accompanied by unanticipated risks. Office pods offer an enclosed space for privacy and comfort, but if they emit high levels of chemicals, they can trigger indoor air quality problems that can cause discomfort or health problems among users. ROOM’s phone booth features a ventilation system that automatically circulates fresh air and is equipped with two fans located in the roof and discreet airflow inlets in the floor, optimizing airflow.

“ROOM is committed to making more room in the workplace for our customers, building better, healthier work environments with our products and solutions. To that end, pursuing UL GREENGUARD Certification was the logical next step to demonstrate that the materials we use in our products are safer and healthier, and support good indoor air quality,” said Brandon Fierro, director of global supply chain at ROOM.

UL GREENGUARD Certification is just one of many steps ROOM is taking to champion sustainability across their business.

“By earning UL GREENGUARD Certification, ROOM demonstrates their support for health and wellness in office spaces and champions employee safety and productivity in workspaces. This is an important milestone in the office pod space, setting the bar for the entire industry,” said Alberto Uggetti, vice president and general manager of UL’s Environment and Sustainability division.

The workplace design industry and office interiors marketplace has become increasingly concerned with sustainability and wellness. With office pod sales skyrocketing, it’s critical that these new products are evaluated for safety, health and environmental risks. Dedicated to science-based safety, UL strives to offer comprehensive testing solutions for office pods with GREENGUARD Certification and safety certification standards, which evaluate products for hazards like fire, electrical and casualty risks.

ROOM products will be featured on UL SPOT along with more than 130,000 product families that showcase third-party verified sustainability attributes. For more information on this web-based product sustainability information tool, visit https://spot.ul.com/.
