To gain market access in many countries, manufacturers must ensure that their products comply with IEC 62368-1, the safety standard for audio/video (AV) and information and communication technology equipment.
Governments around the world introduce regulations to protect their citizens from potential safety risks.
Most governments recognize International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards as proof of compliance to release national safety certifications and allow products to enter their countries.
IEC 62368-1, a hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE) safety standard for AV and information and communication technology (ICT) equipment, replaces IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1.
Many countries have implemented IEC 62368-1 as the minimum requirement for local market access. On a global scale, the situation takes on complexity, as many countries still accept IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1, whereas other countries have implemented IEC 62368-1:2014 (second edition) or IEC 62368-1:2018 (third edition). Manufacturers must ensure compliance to the required edition of the IEC 62368-1 standard for each specific country.
The following table shows the dates of transition to IEC 62368-1 until 2023:
|Country||Transition date from IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065 to IEC 62368-1:2014 (2nd ed.)||Transition date from IEC 62368-1:2014 (2nd) to IEC 62368-1:2018 (3rd ed.)|
|Australia||Feb. 15, 2022||No specific schedule|
|EU||Dec. 20, 2020||Jan. 6, 2023
(date of withdrawal)
|Moldova||Dec. 20, 2020||No specific schedule|
|Saudi Arabia||June 30, 2021||Dec. 31, 2022|
|UAE||Dec. 20, 2020||Dec. 20, 2021|
|South Korea||No transition to IEC 62368-1:2014 (2nd ed.)||No transition from IEC 62368-1:2014 (2nd ed.)
(Note: IEC 60065/60950-1 will be withdrawn on Dec. 31, 2022, with transition to 62368-1:2018 (3rd ed.) on Jan. 1, 2023)
How can UL help?
As a global safety science leader, UL can help you confirm compliance with IEC 62368-1 standards.
UL has deep expertise in helping manufacturers understand and support their transition to IEC 62368-1. UL is well represented in IEC TC108, the IEC technical committee responsible for standards for safety of electronic equipment within AV, information technology and communication technology. This provides our engineers with insights into the latest developments associated with IEC 62368-1 and a solid understanding of the principles on which these standards are built.
We also have expertise in:
- UL/CSA 62368-1/UL Mark Certification for U.S. and Canada
- IEC 62368-1/IECEE CB Scheme
Register for an interactive course designed to help AV and ICT equipment manufacturers gain the expertise they need and comply with the latest requirements of IEC 62368-1. This course includes IEC 62368-1:2018 (third edition); it comprises an e-learning component and an instructor-led session.
Our comprehensive and convenient services, including end-product testing, certification and verification, help you reduce costs and gain market access more quickly.
