This presentation will help you understand HazLoc and explosive atmosphere markings and certifications, including North American Listings, ATEX and IECEx certifications.


HazLoc Global Market Access — Beyond ATEX and IECEX (CCC, ECASEx, EAC, INMETRO, UKCA)

We’ll examine ways manufacturers can achieve these goals and mitigate delays due to significant compliance issues. UL will share expertise, best practices and examples about all types of products and protection techniques.


Functional Safety Concept in HazLoc Applications

The ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU provides mandatory requirements for the use of safety-related devices intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Ex). These requirements provide additional safety measures for equipment, such as “Ex motor,” to de-energizing power in case of overheating due to current overload or imbalance in the supply system. Harmonized standard EN 50495 and an IEC technical specification document, which is under preparation for worldwide adoption using IEC 60079-42, cover these safety devices in Europe.

UKCA — Hazardous Locations

The U.K. formally departed the EU on Jan. 31, 2020, with a transition period until the end of 2020. The U.K. has adopted EU Directives and Regulations; the conformity approach will remain the same. This presentation will help you understand the UKCA marking requirements used for goods placed on the market in England, Wales and Scotland. The presentation will cover hazardous locations — ATEX UK and UKCA Ex Equipment Certification.


Understanding the Regulation and Safety Requirements for Hydrogen Fueling Systems

Understanding Ignition Protection for End-Product Refrigeration and HVAC Standards

Many end-product refrigeration and HVAC standards require ignition protection due to changing environmental requirements and the refrigerants’ inherent flammability. We’ll examine various ways a component can undergo testing/analysis to become ignition-protected so manufacturers can choose the most cost-effective path. We will review various protection methods and what aspects of the design become critical when you need to comply with the methods. We will describe the ways UL can aid refrigeration/HVAC component manufacturers in preparing for the changing market and their clients’ requirements. We’ll also discuss how end-product manufacturers can leverage components UL has already tested to shorten their design timelines.  


Understanding Protection Methods and Best Use Cases for Luminaire Protection for Hazardous Applications

Frank Hernandez is a sales professional working within multiple manufacturing fields to provide customer-focused solutions. He is focused on ATEX, IECEx and division-based HazLoc requirements.

Carson Albanese, senior key accounts executive
UL Sales Executive Carson Albanese has a sales and operations background with eight years of experience in the testing, inspection, certification and advisory industry. He is an expert in general requirements for hazardous locations/oil and gas approvals in many product categories.

John Chambers, staff engineer
John Chambers serves as a UL staff engineer in the Energy and Industrial Automation division with more than 24 years of HazLoc, oil and gas experience conducting research and testing and performing conformity assessments. He is an expert in ATEX, IECEx and division-based HazLoc requirements. He is a participating member of TC31 IECEx committees.

Mike Slowinske, director, Principal Engineering
Michael Slowinske is an environmental engineer with a degree from Washington University. He has 25 years of experience in testing and certification of Ex equipment. He represents UL on the U.S. National Committee for IECEx, as well as several international committees and working groups. He is responsible for UL’s testing activities under its IECEx accreditation.

Dave Malohn, staff engineer
David Malohn is a UL staff engineer with an electrical engineering background and 21 years of HazLoc, oil and gas experience conducting research and testing and performing conformity assessments. He is an expert in ATEX, IECEx and division-based HazLoc requirements.

Hassan El-Sayed, business development manager
Hassan El-Sayed brings more than 30 years of experience in HazLoc product design, functional safety (FS), safety devices in HazLoc, product certification and hands-on industrial experience in IEC 61508, IEC 61511, EN 50271, safety of machinery, etc. He has conducted more than 100 projects in FS, covering product and functional safety management (FSM) certification.

Robert Deadman, senior staff engineer
Robert Deadman is a senior staff engineer at UL with an electrical engineering background and 30 years of HazLoc, oil and gas experience in testing and conformity assessment. He is an expert in ATEX, IECEx and division-based requirements with a focus on HazLoc quality systems and equipment assemblies.

Krysztof Rymarski, staff engineer
Krzysztof Rymarski is a staff engineer at UL with a computer and electrical engineering background and 14 years of HazLoc, oil and gas experience conducting testing and conformity assessments and working on new and innovative products. He is an expert in ATEX, IECEx and division-based HazLoc requirements and specializes in Division 2, Zone 2 and ignition protection for refrigeration and marine industries.

Atul Kapur, project engineer
Atul Kapur is a project engineer at UL with a mechanical engineering background and seven years of HazLoc testing and conformity assessment. He has familiarity with a broad array of product categories, including luminaires, electrical panels, gas detectors and electric motors.

Dolores Fernandez, project engineer 
Dolores Fernandez is a project engineer at UL with an electrical engineering background and seven years of HazLoc, oil and gas testing and conformity assessment experience. She has familiarity with a broad array of product categories, including luminaires, industrial control panels and power-operated pumps for petroleum-dispensing products.

Eduardo Galera, product manager
Eduardo Galera is an electronics engineer with an MBA in project management. He has more than 18 years of experience in testing and certification of Ex equipment. Galera also holds ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and a Green Belt certification. He represents UL on the Brazilian National Committee for IECEx and serves as program owner for this service. He has also served as IECEx assessor since 2017. He is responsible for the HazLoc/oil and gas product management team, which includes portfolio and business development.

Katy Holdredge, senior staff engineer
Katy Holdgredge is a mechanical engineer with a degree from University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She has 25 years of experience in testing and certification of Ex Equipment. She represents UL on the IECEx Executive as the ExAG (IECEx Ex Assessment Group) Deputy Convenor, Vice Chair on the U.S. National Committee for IECEx and several international working groups. She is UL's Program Owner for IECEx and ATEX.
