Automotive SPICE process assessments
Evaluating and optimizing the reliability of automotive R&D processes so you can develop your E/E systems with confidence.
An Automotive SPICE® (ASPICE) assessment is a structured evaluation of R&D processes in automotive software development projects. It focuses on processes, not individuals, and aims to identify weaknesses or risks related to the ASPICE model.
In an assessment, a team of assessors interviews an automotive development project team. The assessors review documents, tools, databases and, where necessary, workplaces. Based on interviews and checks of artifacts, the assessment team identifies weaknesses or risks that may arise from the processes.
What is an ASPICE assessment?
An ASPICE assessment team assesses your project and how the processes are designed to reliably deliver the expected process outcomes by:
- Measuring the capabilities of your R&D processes
- Identifying strengths and weaknesses as insights for process improvement
- Confirming your processes meet crucial customer criteria
Typical assessment cases include:
- Process improvement assessments identify strengths and weaknesses of the processes. This type of assessment is used in the process improvement phase and as a preparation for a product risk assessment.
- Product risk assessments scrutinize whether a product risk is inherent in a product that, for example, will affect the proper integration into the vehicle. The assessment represents the interests of a customer who wants to get a reliable product on time.
The structure of an ASPICE assessment:
- Preparation – Set the stage for success.
- Execution – Dive deep into your processes.
- Reporting – Gain actionable insights.
- Follow-up – Pave the way for continuous improvement.
How is an assessment structured?
The assessment process consists of three main phases:
1. Preparation phase
- Determine assessment type
- Define assessment scope, objectives and plan
- Planning of activities
2. Execution phase
- Typically conducted on site
- Begins with an opening briefing
- Includes interviews and documentation reviews, as well as confidential consolidation sessions between interviews
3. Reporting phase
- Presentation of results
- Delivery of assessment report
Key roles in the assessment
1. Lead assessor
- Responsible for the overall assessment process
2. Co-assessor(s)
- Part of the assessment team
3. Sponsor
- Commissions the assessment
4. Assessment facilitator
- Managing organizational aspects of the assessment
Preparation for an assessment
- Laying the groundwork
- Two to three months in advance
- Detailed preparation
- Two to three weeks in advance
- Preparation for and handling the assessment itself
A project team is expected to adequately prepare to present their work products. They will receive a detailed analysis of process capabilities and areas for improvement to continue developing automotive systems with confidence.
