Vermont Enacts Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Law

May 21, 2014

The Governor of the state of Vermont has signed a bill into law that will require the labeling of genetically engineered foods, the first such law in the nation.

Under the new law, by July 2016, food offered for retail sale that is entirely or partially produced with genetic engineering must be labeled as such.

Genetically engineered foods were approved for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1995, but labels identifying them as such were never required.
