EC Releases Delegated Regulation on Infant and Follow-On Formula

The European Commission (EC) has officially published delegated regulation “Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/127 Supplementing Regulation (EU) No 609/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards the Specific Compositional and Information Requirements for Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula and as regards Requirements on Information Relating to Infant and Young Child Feeding.”
This delegated regulation sets compositional and information requirements for infant formula and follow-on formula that were set out in Commission Directive 2006/141/EC, including changes. Modifications include:

  • Specific amounts of certain macronutrients and micronutrients
  • Labeling obligations

The repeal of Directive 2006/141/EC will take effect on February 22, 2020, in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 609/2013.
Published on February 2, 2016, the delegated regulation will come into force February 22, 2016 and will be applied from February 22, 2020, except with respect to infant formula and follow-on formula manufactured from protein hydrolysates, to which it shall apply from 22 February 2021.
