CAA Announces New Food Labeling Regulation

The Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) of Japan announced a new food labeling regulation, requiring mandatory labeling of nutritional information on the packaging. The nutritional information includes the following:

  • Energy
  • Protein
  • Lipids
  • Carbohydrates
  • Sodium

The new regulation also sets a transition period for the following food products:

  • Food additives and processed foods: 5 years
  • Fresh foods: 1 year and 6 months

Effective April 1, 2015, the regulation excludes small food businesses.
