On May 17, 2021, the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) published its 22nd edition of the Restricted Substances List (RSL). The RSL provides information to apparel and footwear companies regarding bans or restrictions of certain substances in finished apparel, footwear and home textile products by presenting the most stringent restrictions of those substances in global regulations. Since its first publication in 2007, the RSL has been updated regularly by the AAFA’s RSL Task Force to assist the industry in keeping up with compliance requirements.

Some of the changes in the 22nd edition of the RSL include:

  • Updated information on leather and textile ISO standards with regards to azo dyes
  • The addition of certain flame retardants based on Massachusetts House Bill 4900 and Maryland restrictions
  • The addition of pesticide Dicofol as per EU POP 2019/1021
  • A change to the sum concentration of combined phthalates in polymeric/plastic materials

UL’s ChemADVISOR® database is being updated to reflect these changes, which will be available for the July 2021 (2021-3) release.
