Fire Extinguishing System Unit Testing

Evaluating the integrity and compatibility of fire extinguishing systems components, from the cylinders that store extinguishing agents to the detection, actuation, and distribution piping and discharge devices.

Testing fire extinguishing systems

Fire extinguishing systems involve a complex interplay of components – everything from the containers that store extinguishing agents to the detection, actuation and distribution systems, and discharge devices that make them work. More than 60 years ago, we developed the tests required to rate and certify a broad range of fire extinguishing systems such as carbon dioxide extinguishing system units, clean agent extinguishing system units, dry chemical extinguishing system units, and self-contained automatic extinguisher units. We continue to work closely with fire extinguishing system manufacturers to support them in their drive to create safer, more effective products with new technologies.

The simulated tests we perform help ensure that these systems protect facilities against specific classes or types of fires and hazards. Depending on the product type and application, we may conduct tests at a UL Solutions facility or at a designated site with a UL Solutions representative present.

Benefits of our fire extinguishing system testing

We test to UL Solutions-developed safety and performance standards for extinguishing systems that are designed, installed and maintained in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Certified components are correlated to the applicable standards, helping simplify both the design and testing process for you.

Listed products appear in UL Solutions Product Directories that are referenced by more than 2,500 authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and code officials annually.

Fire extinguishing system standards

Current editions of the following standards are used to evaluate and certify extinguishing system units.

Installation standards

  • NFPA 2001 Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems
  • NFPA 12 Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems
  • NFPA 17 Dry Chemical Extinguishing Systems
  • NFPA 17A Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems

Safety and performance standards

  • UL 2127 Inert Gas Clean Agent Extinguishing System Units
  • UL 2166 Halocarbon Clean Agent Extinguishing System Units
  • NFPA 12 Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems
  • UL 1254 Pre-Engineered Dry Chemical Extinguishing System Units
  • UL 300 Fire Testing of Fire Extinguishing Systems for Protection of Commercial Cooking Equipment
  • EN 17446 Fire Extinguishing Systems in Commercial Kitchens
  • EN 15276-1 Condensed Aerosol Extinguishing System

Why UL Solutions for fire extinguishing system testing

UL Solutions works closely with you to determine the appropriate test programs to evaluate your products. It also supports you during the product development cycle by matching product components to existing standards and by addressing specific design and performance challenges. In addition, our engineers can help resolve system performance issues that arise with products in the field. By collaborating with us, you can streamline the testing and certification process, control testing costs, accelerate time to market, and confirm that all systems meet the highest industry standards.
