WA House Passes Flame Retardants Bill for Furniture and Children’s Products

Washington State's House of Representatives has passed Bill HB 1174, also known as the “Toxic-Free Kids and Families Act,” banning five flame retardants that have been designated by the state as chemicals of high concern for children inform use in furniture and children's products. The bill also addresses the following:

  • Authorization of the state toxics control agency to ban cancer-causing and other harmful chemicals from being used as flame retardants;
  • Authorization of the state's Department of Ecology to ban replacement flame retardants if safer alternatives are available; and
  • Public access to information from manufacturers regarding toxic flame retardants in their products
  • The bill has been sent to the Washington State Senate for consideration.
