NORTHBROOK, Ill. — July 2, 2025 — UL Solutions (NYSE: ULS), a global leader in applied safety science, today announced its new certification services for distributed energy resource systems, or large microgrids, that address emerging technologies and enable safer microgrids by evaluating the interoperability of system components and various energy sources.

Distributed energy resource systems, commonly known as microgrids, are local energy systems powered by local energy sources, such as solar or wind farms, that offer increased reliability, resiliency, lower energy costs and enhanced renewable integration. Microgrids are growing in popularity due to rising demands on the main power grid, concerns about power reliability and the expansion of microgrid technologies, including bidirectional electric vehicle charging and mobile microgrids. Large microgrids combine various components and can intentionally disconnect from the main grid to provide power during utility disruptions or operate as a stand-alone system.

“As the world leverages more renewable energy sources, microgrids play a key part in this shift and present unique safety and operational challenges, including power reliability and seamless interoperability with their system components,” said Wesley Kwok, vice president and general manager of the Energy and Industrial Automation group at UL Solutions. “As microgrids become larger and more complex, system-level testing is crucial to help build confidence in microgrid technology and make the transition to renewable sources safer for everyone.”

Prior to the introduction of UL Solutions’ new testing capabilities, microgrid components were only certified to operate individually, but not for their ability to safely interact with other equipment in large, complex systems. The new services for distributed energy resource systems help address these challenges while enabling innovation for emerging commercial microgrid technologies by evaluating safety at the system level.

When the main electrical grid is not available to provide power quality support, voltage and frequency can drift outside of typical utility ranges, which can introduce risks such as overheating and insulation breakdown in electrical equipment. UL Solutions’ new testing services for large microgrids address entire systems, enhancing safety by evaluating how components interact with one another, including when the system is operating alone or disconnected from the main power grid.

UL Solutions performs on-site evaluation and testing of large microgrids according to UL 3001, the Standard for Distributed Energy Resource Systems. This new UL Standard, which is a joint national Standard for the United States and Canada, helps manufacturers demonstrate system-level evaluation of large microgrids and outlines tests for hazards associated with the interaction between various energy sources.

In addition to its new testing for large microgrids, UL Solutions helps customers bring innovative microgrid technologies to market with component testing, compliance and certification, modeling software for maximizing efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and renewable energy integration support.
