United States Drafts Guidance for Reducing Sodium in Prepared Food

July 19, 2016

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released drafted guidance for food manufacturers, restaurants, and food service operations for the voluntary reduction of sodium content in processed and commercially prepared food.

The draft guidance specifies short-term (two-year) and long-term (10-year) guides and is intended to help the American public gradually reduce sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day, a level recommended by experts and scientific evidence.

The draft guidance is open for public comment through October 31, 2016.
