UL Selected by National Energy Operator in Mexico to Provide Wind, Solar Forecasts

UL forecasts to help renewable energy resource estimates for electricity generation and improve grid operations across Mexico

Mexico City, August 16, 2019 – UL, a leading global safety science organization, announced today that it has been selected as the winner of a competitive bidding process issued by Centro Nacional de Control de Energía (CENACE), the national energy operator in Mexico, to provide short-term forecasts of wind speed and solar irradiation in Mexico. UL will help monitor and verify renewable energy generation offers that participate in Mexico’s wholesale electricity market at forty-three locations within close proximity to existing wind farms and solar photovoltaic plants.

CENACE uses wind and solar energy forecasts as inputs to determine if the daily offers that enter the short-term energy market are accurate.  Twice a day for the next 24 months, UL will provide wind speed per hour (m/s) and the global hourly irradiation (W/m2) predictions up to eight days in advance near existing renewable energy locations.  This will help improve the use of renewable energy and help provide greater reliability to the national electric system.  The weather forecasts provided by UL will be used as input data in the wind and solar power generation models of CENACE for the all of Mexico.
