Study Reveals Food Expiration Labels Misleading

October 16, 2013

According to a recent study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), food expiration labels mislead a majority of American consumers, resulting in millions of pounds of wasted food.

The survey concluded that more than 90 percent of Americans prematurely dispose of food as a result of misleading food labels containing phrases such as "sell by" and "use by" due to concerns of food safety. This study follows up a 2012 NRDC report that revealed that Americans dispose of up to 40 percent of our food supply every year, equivalent to $165 billion.
