Streamline Access to Multiple Markets for Molded-Case Circuit Breakers

Learn how you can reduce cost and time by combining your global certification needs.

Circuit breakers in a row

April 14, 2020

Introducing molded-case circuit breakers to the global marketplace can be a complex, costly and time-consuming process.  As technology for circuit breakers evolve, global markets are beginning to mandate both safety requirements, as well as electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for these products. EMC requirements for circuit breakers help address potential hazards from occurring such as nuisance tripping (circuit breaker trips unintentionally) and failed trips (circuit breaker does not trip when intended) due to environmental conditions such as humidity and high heat. Key industry stakeholders recognize a need to incorporate EMC specific requirements into safety standards.

UL 489, a trinational Standard for molded-case circuit breakers, molded-case switches and circuit-breaker enclosures for access to U.S., Canada and Mexico, has been revised to align with the EMC specifications that are already within the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard, IEC 60947-2. The alignment of these requirements now fosters relevant combined molded-case circuit breaker product evaluations. With harmonized EMC requirements and through UL’s IEC for Electrical Equipment (IECEE) CB Scheme participation, UL can simultaneously provide true global market access solutions via UL 489 and IEC 60947-2.

Accelerate your access to the Latin American market with the UL-NOM Mark and Colombia RETIE Equivalency Letter

As UL 489 is a trinational Standard, only a single evaluation is necessary for your certification needs for U.S., Canada and Mexico (UL-NOM Mark) with testing conducted in any of our global accredited laboratories. Furthermore, this evaluation can support your market access to Colombia via the RETIE Equivalency Letter, which can be combined into this evaluation. Differentiate your brand in the marketplace with evaluations conducted by a trusted independent third-party certification body.

Benefits of streamlining the process

This streamlined and accelerated process helps to save time and money through a well-proven global certification program. Utilizing combined testing offers:

  • Single submittal for products to be tested against multiple standards
  • Potential reduction in required product samples and combined test programs
  • UL’s global network and expertise at your disposal as you navigate the complex national or regional standard requirements

Combining your global certification needs helps you accelerate time-to-market, reduce costs, improve product safety and overcome market risk and complexity.
