STP 82 – Electric Gardening Appliances – The first edition of the Standard for Electric Motor-Operated Hand-Held Tools, Transportable Tools And Lawn And Garden Machinery – Safety – Part 4-1000: Particular Requirements For Utility Machines, UL 62841-4-1000, was published June 19, 2020.

STP 471 – Commercial Refrigerators And Freezers – The second edition of the Standard for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-89: Particular Requirements for Commercial Refrigerating Appliances with an Incorporated or Remote Refrigerant Unit or Compressor, was circulated to the Standard Technical Panel (STP) and for public preliminary review closing July 24, 2020. A number of comments were received, which are under review by the technical harmonization committee.

STP 507 - Electric Fans – A task group proposal coordinated by the CPSC to include a new thermal condition performance test for unattended fans reached consensus early in 2020, but with several comments. The final updated proposal was recirculated with replies to all comments in April 2020, and the revised version of UL 507 was published May 27, 2020.

STP 745 – Electric Tools – The first edition of the Standard for Electric Motor-Operated Handheld Tools, Transportable Tools and Lawn and Garden Machinery – Safety – UL 62841-2-3, Particular Requirements for Hand-Held Grinders, Polishers, and Disc-Type Sanders was circulated to the STP and for public preliminary review, closing May 15, 2020. Comments were received, and the proposed new edition is expected to move to ballot during Q3 2020.

Five new proposal topics for the Standard for Electric Motor-Operated Hand-Held Tools, Transportable Tools and Lawn and Garden Machinery - Safety - Part 1: General Requirements, UL 62841-1, covering various topics were circulated for STP ballot closing May 18, 2020. All five topics reached consensus with no negative votes and minimal comments. With no need to recirculate any revised proposals, the changes to the standard are expected to be published in August 2020.

STP 749 – Household Dishwashers – A call for proposals concluded May 29, 2020. A significant number (21) of proposals were received, compiled and shared with the technical harmonization committee (THC) in July 2020. The next step will be for the THC to schedule a series of meetings to review and discuss the proposals, in preparation for STP and public preliminary review. The THC meeting schedule is to be determined.

STP 858 – Household Electric Ranges – A new THC has been formed to begin work on developing a binationally harmonized standard with CSA. Work is scheduled to begin on the binational standard during Q3 2020.

STP 1017 - Vacuum Cleaners, Blower Cleaners, And Household Floor Finishing Machines – This binational standard with Canada has been very active in 2020. UL and CSA standards staff have worked together to review and prepare the proposed new (11th) edition of UL 1017, Vacuum Cleaners, Blower Cleaners, and Household Floor Finishing Machines, as developed by the THC. In parallel, the THC responsible for the new binational adoption of IEC 60335-2-2 meets on a monthly basis to continue the work of harmonizing UL 1017 with IEC 60335-2-2. The next meetings for both THCs are planned for August 2020.

STP 2157 – Electric Clothes Washing Machines, Extractors, And Dryers – The technical harmonization committee has not yet initiated the next standards cycle for UL 2157 (clothes washers). STP preliminary review for the proposed new (6th) edition of UL 2158 (clothes dryers) closed for comment Q4 2019. The THC is working on reviewing the comments and preparing the proposals for STP ballot.
