SCCS Consults on the Use of Nano Form of TiO2 in Sunscreens and Sprays

October 16, 2015

EUROPEAN UNION - The European Commission (EC) Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) is seeking public opinion on the use of nano form of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) in sunscreens and sprays, used in these products as UV-filter.

SCCS is requesting to evaluate the safety of TiO2 at a concentration amount up to 5.5%. The new opinion specifies the following:

  • In light of the data provided, does SCCS consider TiO2 safe when used as UV-filter in sunscreens and personal care spray products at a concentration up to 5.5%?
  • Does the SCCS have any further scientific concerns regarding the use of TiO2 when used as UV-filter in sunscreens and personal care products?

Currently, the ingredient is being authorized for use as seen below under the Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009:

  • Colorant under entry 143 of Annex IV
  • UV-Filter under entry 27 OF Annex VI
