Maine Adds Formaldehyde to Priority Chemical List

UNITED STATES - Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced the addition of formaldehyde to its priority chemicals list under the Toxic Chemicals in Children's Products law, requiring reporting of the substance's use in certain children’s products. It specifically applies to intentionally added formaldehyde in the following product types, intended for children under the age of 12 years:

  • Toys and games
  • Bedding and safety seats
  • Clothing and footwear
  • Cosmetics and personal care products
  • School, craft and occasion supplies
  • Jewelry, embellishments and personal accessories

Effective July 26, 2015, manufacturers or distributors of these children's products must report certain information to the DEP by January 22, 2016.
