EUROPEAN UNION - The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has released a report entitled “Scoping Investigations on the Release of Metals from Crystalware,” in support of a revision to the Ceramics Directive 84/500/EEC for the reduction of lead and cadmium limits, and development of limits for additional metals and possibly to extend the scope to other types of articles.
Following the European Commission's consideration to revise Directive 84/500/EEC, the JRC has been assigned to give scientific and technical supporting data on testing options.
Focusing on crystalware, the study considered 15 samples of crystalware using three different approaches. It also studied the release of metals into white wine as a benchmark for food contact materials. For all samples, the researchers observed “relevant” releases of lead.
