Italy Introduces Regulations on Environmental Marking of Packaging

On Sept. 11, 2020, Italy introduced specific regulations on the environmental marking of packaging.

On Sept. 11, 2020, the Legislative Decree 11 September 2020 n.116 was published in the Italian Official Gazette, which amended the Legislative Decree 3 April 2006, n. 152 (environmental regulations).

The decree made changes to Italian environmental legislation with regard to: the environmental marking of packaging, the circular economy and the extended responsibility of producers for the waste they produce, waste management and transport.

With regard to the new requirements relating to the environmental marking of packaging (Article 219 (5) of Legislative Decree 152/2006), packaging shall mandatory be labeled with:

  • Indications relating to the separate collection, reuse, recovery and recycling as well as correct information to consumers on the final destination of the packaging.
  • The nature of the packaging materials used, based on Commission Decision 97/129/EC.

The applicable Italian technical standards (UNI) and the decisions adopted by the EU Commission shall be taken into consideration.
