Industrial motors (larger than a standard coffee maker) are typically regulated for energy efficiency. In the North America market, separate regulations exist in for the United States, Canada, and California. The California Energy Commission (CEC) is the newest regulation of the three, but Canada recently expanded regulations (effective June 5), meaning some manufacturers may not be correctly registered.
It is important for all parties to be aware of these regulations and any changes that may be taking place as liability exists at several levels. For each of the regulations involving integral horsepower products, motor manufacturers selling stand-alone equipment and dealers and manufacturers of products incorporating motors covered by the regulations when importing into the respective region are responsible for remaining compliant. Further, end-product manufacturers employing motors not properly registered and/or not meeting the minimum required efficiencies – even if installed in a larger piece of equipment – are subject to civil penalties.
If you manufacture motors in this category or provide products using these motors, now is the time to work toward ensuring compliance. This process should begin by asking your motor manufacturers for test data and proof of third party verification as open dialog with suppliers is important.
UL's database is always up-to-date and shows manufacturers that have had their motors verified for energy efficiency:
Simply search the UL Database for category code number (CCN) ZWKG (or ZYKH for Canadian regulations) to determine if the motor in question has been verified. You may access the database HERE
Once the motor has been verified for efficiency, they're eligible for registration. Tips for confirming verification under these various standards can be found below:
