Illinois House Passes Bill Banning Crib Bumpers

May 19, 2015

The State of Illinois House passed HB 3761, amending the Children's Product Safety Act. Introduced by Representative Emily McAsey (D-Lockport), the Bill prohibits commercial dealers, manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers or retailers from selling, offering to sell, leasing or offering to lease a crib bumper pad in the state of Illinois. Failure to comply will result in a civil penalty of not less than $100 and not more than $500 for each violation.

The bill does allow the sale of mesh crib liners without padding.

A ban on the aforementioned children’s product has been approved in the city of Chicago, as well as in the state of Maryland. Target and Ikea have also expressed their support by refusing to sell padded crib linings.

The bill has been introduced to the Senate and has been referred to Assignments.
