Health Canada Consults on Regulation of Self-Care Products

October 13, 2016

Health Canada is consulting the public on the proposed regulation for self-care products in the country. Self-care products are defined as products that can be directly purchase without a doctor’s prescription, including the following:

  • Cosmetics
  • Over-the-counter drugs
  • Natural health products

The consultation seeks comments for the following approaches:

  • Products of similar risk profiles would be treated in a similar manner.
  • The federal government would review health claims based on a new definition.
  • A risk-based approach to compliance and safety monitoring will continue.

The consultation is open from September 7 to October 24, 2016.
