UNITED STATES - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated a public consultation regarding its proposed amendment of the Jewelry Guides, providing guidance to deter businesses from having deceptive claims about precious metal, pewter, diamond, gemstone, and pearl products.
Following a public consultation conducted on 2012 and a public roundtable in June 2013, the commission has proposed changes to the document, specifically for the following:
- Below-threshold alloys
- Precious metal content of products containing more than one precious metal
- Surface application of precious metals, lead-glass filled stones, “cultured” diamonds, pearl treatments, varietals
- Misuse of the word “gem”
Deadline for submission of comments is April 4, 2016.
