FDA Issues Draft Guidance for Menu Labeling

UNITED STATES - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued Draft Guidance for Industry: A Labeling Guide for Restaurants and Retail Establishments Selling Away-From-Home Foods - Part II, requiring that chain restaurants and similar retail food establishments with 20 or more locations list calorie information on menus and menu boards.

The guidance specifies the requirements in following the menu labeling provisions according to Section 403(q) (5)(H) of the (FD&C Act) [21 U.S.C. 343(q)(5)(H)].

The final rule on nutrition labeling of standard menu items in restaurants and similar retail food establishments was originally published on December 1, 2014 (79 FR 71156).  Restaurants and food retail establishments must comply with the calorie menu labeling by December 1, 2016.
