Europe Authorizes Use of Titanium Dioxide as UV Filter

August 11, 2016

The European Commission (EC) has adopted Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/1143 Amending Annex VI to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council on Cosmetic Products

The regulation permits the use of titanium dioxide (nano) for use as a UV-filter in cosmetic products at a maximum concentration of 25 percent w/w, except in applications that may lead to exposure of the end-user's lungs by inhalation.

The decision follows the assessment and recommendation of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety in 2014.

The regulation took effect on August 3, 2016.
