EU Publishes Regulation No 589/2014 on Dioxins and PCBs in Foodstuffs

June 25, 2014

The European Commission (EC) has published Regulation No 589/2014, providing methods of sampling and analysis for the control of levels of dioxins, dioxin-like PCBs and non-dioxin-like PCBs in certain foodstuffs, repealing Regulation (EU) No 252/2012.

The regulation accounts for gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), in addition to gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS), as a confirmatory method for checking compliance with the maximum levels of PCBs and dioxins allowed in certain foodstuffs.
