EU Extends Child Resistant Lighter Decision to 12 Months

The European Union (EU) has extended the decision made on the prohibition of the placing of non-child resistant novelty lighters. The extension is made until May 11, 2016.

The requirements as stated in Decision 2006/502/EC requiring Member States to take measures to ensure that only lighters which are child-resistant are placed on the market and to prohibit the placing on the market of novelty lighters are:

  • Lighters shall comply with the requirements of EN ISO. 9994
  • No Lighter shall be a novelty lighter
  • Lighters shall be resistant to successful operation by at least 85% of the child test panel when tested in accordance to clause 5
  • The original timeline of the prohibition was for a period of 12 months and has been extended 8 times. The current extension is the 9th time the Decision has been extended.
