EU Adopts New Toy Safety Directive Reducing Limit of Flame Retardant TCEP

July 28, 2014

The European Commission (EC) adopted Directive 2014/79/EU, which drastically reduces the maximum limit value for the flame retardant tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), CAS No 115-96-8 to 5 mg/kg in toys for children up to the age of 3 years and in any toys intended to be placed in the mouth, regardless of intended age.

TCEP alternatives, namely tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (TCPP), CAS No 13674-84-5, and tris[2-chloro-1-(chloromethyl)ethyl] phosphate (TDCP), CAS No 13674-87-8, are also subject to the same limit adopted for TCEP.

The new limit will be applicable to all three flame retardants beginning December 21, 2015.
