ESMA Announces Implementation of SI Used in Textile Trade (UAE)

January 21, 2015

The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) replaced foot, inch and yard with metre in the textile trade under the national system of measurement and calibration effective January 1, 2015.

UAE explains that the move is an important in unifying the units of measurement used in the UAE to become consistent with the International System of Units (SI), and emphasizes that fabric and textiles suppliers and merchants must comply with the new system.

The implementation of the new measurement system is in compliance with the Cabinet’s Decree No. 31 of 2006, which states in Article VIII that the SI units will be the exclusive basis of the legal units of measurement in the country.
