EN 62368-1:2014 now included in the European Union Official Journal for the Low Voltage Directive (LVD)

May 4, 2015

On April 17, 2015 the updated list of standards associated with the Low Voltage Directive (2006/95/EC) was published in the EU Official Journal (OJ).   Included in the latest OJ was reference to EN 62368-1 for the first time.

Some AV/ICT equipment manufacturers have been hesitating requesting EN 62368-1 for EU markets until the OJ was updated, so this is a positive development for Industry.

It is noted that the normally included information on ‘Reference of superseded standard’, and ‘Date of cessation of presumption of conformity of superseded standard’ currently is not included in the current issue of the OJ.  However, the transition information previously published by CENELEC, including a Date of Withdrawal (DOW) of Dec 20, 2020 for EN 62368-1 to replace both EN 60065 (AV equipment) and EN 60950-1 (ICT equipment), has not changed and will be included in the next issue of the OJ, likely to be published later this year.

The key development is that EN 62368-1 now has been formally documented as a suitable standard for establishing presumption of conformity of AV & ICT equipment with the EU LVD.  This development, combined with the already active IECEE CB Scheme for IEC 62368-1, and Edition No. 2 of CSA/UL 62368-1 already being acceptable in Canada and the U.S., provides growing incentive for manufacturers to now consider IEC 62368-based standards for safety of AV & ICT equipment.
