EFSA Concludes Safety of Chemical Mixture Used in Food Contact Materials

February 11, 2016

EUROPEAN UNION - The European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) food contact materials panel (CEF) has released its opinion, concluding the safety of a mixture of the following substances for use in food contact materials:

  • Tetraethyl orthosilicate (CAS No. 78-10-4)
  • Hexamethyldisilazane (CAS No. 999-97-3)

The chemicals are used together as a chain extender for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for the purpose of increasing the molecular weight of the polymer after recycling, and can be used safely up to 0.12% weight by weight (w/w) for the production of recycled PET.
