EC Enforces Parabens Limits in Cosmetics

May 19, 2015

The European Commission (EC) is enforcing new maximum concentration limits for propylparaben and butylparaben in cosmetics sold in the EU.

Introduced in 2014, the new limits reduce from a maximum allowable concentration of 0.4% when used individually and 0.8% when mixed with other esters, to 0.14%, when used individually or together.

A prohibition on their use in leave-on products, designed for the nappy area of children under the age of three, has also been imposed. A warning label to not use the product on the nappy area has been mandated.

Products placed on the market effective April 16, 2015 must comply with the new rules, but current stocks will be allowed to be available until October 16, 2015.
