Bengaluru, India, September 11, 2020 – UL, a leading global safety science company, continues to strengthen acceptance security for contactless payments across the world. The company today announced that Digitsecure is the first product in India to be certified to the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council’s Contactless Payments on COTS (CPoC™) Security and Testing Requirements for its SoftPOS solution. PCI’s CPoC enables contactless payment acceptance on a merchant's consumer device using an embedded near-field communications (NFC) interface.
A set of principles and requirements for a mobile payment-contactless acceptance solution, CPoC Security and Test Requirements provide a security framework to protect the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive payment information captured and processed in CPoC solutions. Digitsecure facilitates contactless chip-based payments using the NFC interface of common commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) devices, such as a smartphones or tablets. Designed to allow merchants payment acceptance flexibility, Digitsecure addresses online based contactless chip-based transactions that further enables merchant acceptance.
CPoC certification means that Digitsecure meets key security requirements that help ensure the security of the payment data obtained through the NFC interface and contactless kernel on the COTS device. These security mechanisms, controls and mitigations protect the consumer’s account data and other assets, such as cryptographic keys, helping to ensure the payment process is protected when performed on consumer grade devices such as mobile phones.

Currently, merchants can accept card payment via a dedicated credit card terminal, or process payment through hardware readers that can transfer magnetic stripe data to a payment application running on a PC or mobile device. Digitsecure allows the merchant to completely bypass both options and conduct a contactless transaction on a smartphone or tablet without any external hardware.
The certification comes at a time when businesses at the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic are making a top priority way to reduce transmission risk for in-store customers. Data from a recent survey conducted by Mastercard presented a rise in the use of contactless payments. This was attributed to worries about potential of germ transmission at point-of-sale systems including fears about the cleanliness of signature touchpads.
Contactless payments help alleviate those concerns while also decreasing in-store payment transaction times. On average, the transaction time for a chip-enabled card can be as much as 30 to 45 seconds, a contactless transaction can reduce that to as little as 10 to 15 seconds. Shorter transaction times translate to less time customers in close proximity to each other while waiting in line.
