Connecticut House Supports for Cadmium Rules in Children’s Jewelry

The Connecticut House of Representatives has passed HB 6743 [PDF], regulating cadmium in children’s jewelry intended for ages 12 years or younger. The bill, which would be in effect for only five years, will now be forwarded to the Senate. If enacted, the legislation will be enforced on October 1, 2015 and mandates the following:

  • Children’s jewelry could not contain more than 300 parts per million of cadmium
  • Passing standard for the surface coating test for cadmium is 75 parts per million
  • Manufacturers are required to register with the state Department of Consumer Protection
  • Civil and criminal penalties imposed for non-compliance
