China Enacts Infant and Children’s Textile Safety Standard

July 19, 2016

The Standardization Administration of the People’s Republic of China (SAC) has implemented the Mandatory National Standard GB 31701-2015: Safety Technical Code for Infants’ and Children’s Textile Products.

This is the first national standard for these categories of products, and it specifies limits on six plasticizers and two heavy metals (lead and cadmium).

  • Stipulations for cords and drawstrings used in the different areas, such as neck, shoulders and waist (e.g., no cord is allowed in the neck area of clothes for infants and children below the age of 7 years)
  • Stipulations for tensile strength of attached components (no sharp points or edges)
  • Addition of combustibility requirement

The standard was implemented on June 1, 2016 and provides a two-year transition period for products to comply.
