CEN Mandates to Standardize Permanently Installed Outdoor Fitness Equipment

February 25, 2014

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is developing a new standard (prEN 16630:2013) which specifies the general requirements for the production, installation, inspection and maintenance of permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment.

The new standard, which is scheduled to be published in April 2015, will not apply to electrically operated equipment or equipment to be used with assistance. Rather, it will apply to equipment intended for users over 14 years, or having a height greater than 1400 mm.

Playground equipment and indoor stationary training equipment are not covered by the requirements of prEN 16630:2013.

The following standards for playground equipments are under review. The date of publication of the new revised standards is scheduled for October 2016:

  •  prEN 1176-1 rev - equipment and surfaces for playgrounds - General safety requirements and test methods
  • prEN 1176-2 rev - equipment and surfaces for playgrounds - Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for swings
  • prEN 1176-3 rev - equipment and surfaces for playgrounds - Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for slides
  • prEN 1176-6 rev - equipment and surfaces for playgrounds - Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for rocking equipment

The publication of the revision of EN 1176-11 " Playground equipment and surfacing - Part 11: Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for spatial network" is scheduled for July 2014.
