ASTM Releases Standards for Leather

UNITED STATES - The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has released the following standards for leather products.

ASTM D5053 - 03(2015) Standard Test Method for Colorfastness of Crocking of Leather

  • This method covers the determination of the degree of color that may be transferred from leather to other surfaces by rubbing under wet (damp) or dry conditions, or both. This test method does not apply to wet blue.

ASTM D4653 - 87(2015) Standard Test Method for Total Chlorides in Leather

  • This method is intended for the use in the determination of total chlorides in mineral tanned leather.

ASTM D2807 - 93(2015) Standard Test Method for Chromic Oxide in Leather (Perchloric Acid Oxidation)

  • This method covers the determination of chromic oxide in leathers that have been partly or completely tanned with chromium compounds. In general the samples will contain between 1 and 5 % chromium, calculated as chromic oxide.

ASTM D1913 - 00(2015) Standard Test Method for Resistance to Wetting of Garment-Type Leathers (Spray Test)

  • This method covers the qualitative evaluation of the surface repellence to water of garment-type leathers. This test method does not apply to wet blue.
