- On August 12th, 2014, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the final Version 6.1 ENERGY STAR Computer Program Requirements. The Version 6.1 requirements took effect on September 10th, 2014. This new version broadens the scope of the specification to include Slates/Tablets and Portable All-In-One’s. Products previously certified to V6.0 will not need to be retested.
- On July 9th, 2014, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), together with the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), and Japan Business Machine and Information System Industries Association (JBMIA), and ENERGY STAR® Certification Bodies (CBs), met to discuss ongoing data quality issues, program implementation consistency, and future specification efforts. - On September 5th, 2014, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notified stakeholders that the Agency was expanding the scope of the ENERGY STAR Imaging specification to add large format devices. These products can be tested with the existing Imaging Test Method and would be subject to the existing efficiency requirements for large format products. Table 1 in the specification and test method have been updated to include large format high performance ink jet printers and multi-function devices. This addition does not impact any existing certifications nor does it require any changes to the QPX data exchange.
- On September 18th, 2014, the EPA reminded stakeholders that the effective date for the Version 3.0 ENERGY STAR® Telephony Program Requirements was October 1, 2014. As of October 1, the ENERGY STAR list of certified products will only contain products certified to the Version 3.0 specification, and all telephony products certified to the Version 2.2 specification will be removed from the list. Certification bodies may only certify telephony products to the Version 3.0 specification and must submit data to EPA via XML-based web service.
- On September 24th, 2014, the EPA released the following statement in regards to the Verification Testing program and requirements:
“Given an overall compliance rate of more than 99%, as well as other considerations, the Agency plans to reduce the minimum verification testing rate for CE/IT products to 5% on a trial basis for 2015.”
1. On October 1st, 2014, The Department of Energy has issued a pre- publication Federal Register notice of proposed rule-making for test procedures for external power supplies which includes changes to the existing power supply test method.
- NRCan has released the following guidance on Canadian requirements and their relationship with ENERGY STAR:
“ENERGY STAR must meet regulatory requirements in Canada
Canada and the United States now share their certified product listings for ENERGY STAR. Products that appear on the list and are also subject to Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations must still meet all the requirements described in the Regulations. Before a regulated product is imported into Canada or shipped between provinces it must:
• meet minimum energy performance standards;
• be tested to the test standard required by the Regulations and bear an energy efficiency verification mark authorized by a certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada;
• be reported on an energy efficiency report which has been submitted to NRCan; and
• import information about the product must be provided to Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
ENERGY STAR certification does not negate these requirements. To find out if your ENERGY STAR product is a regulated product in Canada, contact NRCan’s energy efficiency compliance team.”
