UL’s new drone standard helps ensure battery safety
Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, are growing in popularity and use. From search and rescue efforts to film and news broadcasts, an increasing number of drones are taking to the skies. Many of these drones rely on lithium-ion batteries as their power source, and now UL 3030, Drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), is helping ensure the safety of those power sources.
“A lithium-ion battery contains a lot of energy in a small space,” said Nathan Wang an engineer at UL. “With our new Standard, UL 3030, what we are trying to accomplish is a method to help make sure the battery isn’t going to have an issue during charging or flight.”
The binational standard is also a consensus standard and will be submitted to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for consideration to include in its workplace rules. As drone use continues to grow, safety becomes increasingly important, and UL’s expertise will be there to help ensure safety.
