BatteryGuard™ 325L Flashlight and Classic 400L Lantern from The Coleman Company of Wichita, Kansas recently achieved certification to UL S 8001.

Coleman’s products are the first to earn certification to UL S 8001, a certification program UL created to measure elements defined by the Portable Lights American Trade Organization (PLATO) in their ANSI/PLATO FL-1 2019 standard.

UL S 8001 program details

Testing to UL S 8001 includes evaluating accurate measurements for brightness, beam distance and run time. That data is maintained in our searchable UL Product iQ® database (found under UL category control number OUTF). Coleman’s certification and product details can easily be found in our parametric search, by name, file number, product name and more.

The product’s certification results from validation of Coleman’s product claims and grants authorized use of the Enhanced UL Certification Mark that can be applied to all certified products and literature. This enhanced Mark demonstrates compliance to the certification criteria by a respected independent third-party Certification body and gives retailers the tools they need to search for products that meet the ANSI/PLATO FL-1 2019 standard requirements in an easy-to-use database.

As more manufacturers test their products using UL S 8001, the searchable product database will allow retailers to differentiate products with accurate claims.

About the ANSI/PLATO FL-1 2019 standard

The portable flashlight industry has seen widespread misrepresentation or exaggeration of lumens output on product packaging, which consumers rely on to guide their purchasing decisions. Poor performing products and products that promote false claims negatively impact retailers.

PLATO published the updated ANSI/PLATO FL-1 2019 standard to provide performance benchmarks for the industry for portable flashlights and lanterns. These benchmarks significantly benefit consumers by improving portable lighting quality and the importance of transparency, and benefit retailers and resellers searching for high quality products.

"We commend Coleman for its leadership and applaud them for being the first manufacturer to have products certified to UL S 8001. The Qualified Product list will be an invaluable resource for consumers and retailers looking to verify performance claims, and it will publicly highlight manufacturers of portable lighting products with the utmost integrity. We're very excited to see the list of certified portable lighting products grow."
