Commodity Hazard Classification Services

Providing an independent assessment of the fire risks associated with various types of stored commodities.

A fire test in a testing laboratory

We test the combustion characteristics of a broad range of commodities in various packaging configurations and assign a commodity hazard classification referenced in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 13, the standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. We conduct the tests under a specialized calorimeter hood that collects burning gases during flaming combustion. Our detailed reports assist insurers by providing all the information they need to assess risk comprehensively.

Hazard ratings depend on a number of factors relating to the storage and shipping of commodities. Product and packaging composition is ever-changing, driven by raw material availabilities, product designs and packaging advances. Commodity classification helps to safeguard against the unknown by identifying risks and enabling the development of relevant protection schemes that support insurance requirements.

Our engineers work closely with manufacturers and packaging engineers to review packaging and transportation solutions to help promote safer transportation by reducing fire risk. Upfront planning can help you optimize your commodity classification while meeting the requirements of your retail customers.
