Children’s Furniture Testing

As a leading provider of rigorous, independent furniture testing, we have one of the most important jobs of all — helping ensure that children’s products are compliant with the applicable safety standard.

As our scientific understanding of how to keep children safer rapidly advances, it can be challenging to stay informed and compliant with the industry’s ever-evolving standards. That’s why we’ve made it our business to stay on top of the latest regulations and protocols. We’re here to help you navigate through the compliance process to help ensure that the furniture you produce meets the standards it needs to.

UL is a leading provider of rigorous, independent furniture testing, including performance and durability, flammability and chemical content testing. Our team of furniture experts have the resources and knowledge to guide you through the process, perform the appropriate tests and provide Verification — all in a timely and efficient manner.

We can help you demonstrate the safety and quality of your children’s furniture products through U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) third-party testing. We can also help you meet federal and various state flammability regulations. Our test methods, which are designed to demonstrate product safety, include:

  • Reaction to heat
  • Small flame
  • Radiance plates
  • Cigarette and match tests

In addition, we are the exclusive provider of GREENGUARD Certification, which helps manufacturers clearly communicate the health-based features of their products. Indoor air is two- to five-times more polluted than outdoor air, and the primary sources of this pollution are furnishings and building materials, which can release hundreds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Breathing these pollutants is linked to a variety of health problems, including allergies, asthma, cardiovascular disease, reproductive disorders and some forms of cancer. Children are especially at risk for the adverse health effects of poor indoor air quality, and GREENGUARD Certification is a tool you can use to communicate your commitment to indoor air quality by producing low-emitting products.

If you sell into California, you need to meet Proposition 65 requirements. We can help by testing for the presence of any of the 900 chemical substances contained in or emitted by your products.
